I've been hearing from many clients that change is in the wind for many of their teams in 2024, and I can say with confidence (and evidence!) Team Coaching is just the ticket for bringing together teams where there has been a lot of change. It helps them realign on direction, ways of working together through collaboration, and most of all, strengthens team bonds.
Whether you have restructures going on in your business, have experienced or are about to experience a number of people changes in your team(s) read on, and then listen to this Podcast for a number of fantastic suggestions about supporting your team to be the best they can be.
Team Coaching is well worth considering as an initiative for 2024.
What the Best Leaders Know and What Skills they Develop
"Being a leader is one of the hardest jobs on the planet..." according to Marcus Buckingham who is interviewed in this excellent 30-minute podcast where he talks about the power of teams, self-awareness, and your team knowing themselves.
There are three areas of this podcast that resonated with me, which included a) Teaming, Team Joining and Team Blending, b) the importance of simple frequent rituals (with your direct reports), and c) curiosity about the unique motivators of each person in your team.
Teaming, Team Joining and Team Blending
Buckingham refers to ‘loves’ and 'loathes'. I call these 'motivators' and 'stressors'. I believe the DISC Flow team assessment is a powerful tool because it provides an understanding of motivators and stressors. Buckingham says “On the best teams we don’t have a bunch of perfect people. We have a bunch of people who need one another, and that’s what a team is.” I recommend building a team discipline so that when a team member joins your team, you all share your motivators and your stressors.
Simple frequent rituals
Check in with your people once a week. Why? A manager listening to “what you love”, “and how you're using it” and asking, “How can I help?” can lead to a 67% reduction in turnover in the following 90 days, and a 77% increase in employee engagement.
Curiosity about the unique motivators of each person
The team is the best context to make use of uniqueness. Buckingham suggests adopting the mindset that “each of my people learns and contributes differently and as the team leader I can’t pretend that’s not true. You can’t tell people their motivators are a lie, or irrelevant....people are not a cog in a machine or a mechanism for getting work done. Their loves and how they contribute them is the way in which we do everything.” I hope you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as I did.
